What is AIESEC?
When entering college, AIESEC was on my list of organizations to join. I wanted to travel and experience the world, and I heard AIESEC was one of the people who offered that. I didn’t know much about it other than the social media posts my friends made about it.
But what I discovered this past semester within AIESEC is so much more.
What is AIESEC? One of the biggest youth led, non profit international organizations in the world that focuses to change people’s lives through cultural exchanges. Just a bunch of college kids, working to send themselves and other college kids through volunteer and internship opportunities abroad. Why? To create a bridge between different cultures and facilitate self growth and leadership skills.
I won’t go into the deep history of AIESEC but I believe it is such a beautiful organization. On one end, students like me develop leadership and real world business experience in running our own little non-profit within our universities. Students we send abroad develop the same leadership skills and business experience while being culturally immersed.
And although with my short time being in AIESEC, I’ve fallen in love with it.
I’ve fallen in love with the culture.
I love how cheesy and crass AIESEC can be at the same time (I didn’t think that could actually be possible), yet when it comes down to it we get to fucking work. It’s that work hard, play hard mentality that everyone talks about doing and we actually do it. And we’re corny as fuck when we do it. I love the puns and the small positive reinforcements whenever we achieve things, whether it be a big or small achievement.
I’ve fallen in love with the people.
Every person that I’ve met in AIESEC has their own unique story. Everyone is a traveler, in real life and in their own minds. They come from all over the world and are united on one purpose, which is to make the world they come from a better place. And everyone forms such close bonds with each other through this united purpose. I love my local AIESEC committee within San Jose State University. I love all the people I’ve met at the AIESEC conferences I’ve attended. Creating friendships with people within AIESEC from all over the country has taught me so much understanding of the world and my place in it.
I’ve fallen in love with the self growth.
All the people I have met in AIESEC has impacted who I am as a person. The experiences that AIESEC put me through, whether it be professional or personal, has pushed me. I was pushed to think outside of my current reality and dream big for myself. I’ve grown and am still growing into a new and improved version of myself everyday, and AIESEC plays a part in supporting my growth. AIESEC is my pusher.
I just want to end with thank you for reading about something I love. I can’t wait to share more about my AIESEC adventures, and if you’re interested to learn more about AIESEC (or even join our SJSU local chapter), I’ll link everything below.
